Kampot, 2001: These kids are Muslim Cambodians, often called Chams, whose parents are mostly fishermen along the coast of the Gulf of Siam. Outside Kampot there was a small, clean, very tight Cham community, which was always inspiring to see after passing through so many nasty villages along the highway. The Chams were nearly eliminated during the Pol Pot years (1975-79), but have rebounded dramatically, and appear to be doing quite well these days.
