Phnom Penh, 1991: On my first trip to Cambodia we went to a heartbreaking orphanage where I made this image. The kids even had to share beds, and had no possessions of their own. This woman was named Pen Seda, and she's holding pictures of her parents, both killed during the Pol Pot genocide (1975-79). I ran into her a few years later and was happy to hear she was engaged. Cambodian orphanages are still full of kids, yet the US Embassy in Phnom Penh no longer issues visas to orphans, probably because of the alarming level of official corruption in Cambodia.
