Phnom Penh, 1991: These kids were completely stoned from smoking cheap Cambodian cigarettes—I found them at an abandoned Buddhist pagoda only two blocks from King Sihanouk's elegant Khemarin Palace. At that time I didn't speak any Khmer (Cambodian) language, but I suspected these kids had fled with their parents into the capital to escape either poverty or war. For the next five years I returned to this same pagoda, as there were always colorful characters hanging around, and I was often able to get a good photograph there. Photo: © Doug Niven
