Siem Reap, 1994: These guys had just defected from Pol Pot's border stronghold of Anlong Veng, and had participated in the Khmer Rouge attack of Siem Reap the year before. It was always interesting talking to Khmer Rouge soldiers, as they had amazing stories of what life was like inside the guerilla group's so-called "liberated areas". Every foreign correspondent ached to have a dateline from a Khmer Rouge area, yet it almost never happened, as it was just too risky, and Pol Pot's xenophobic policies meant we had to stay far away. Thankfully all of Cambodia is now safe for travelling. Photo: © Doug Niven |
