Siem Reap, 2001: Young novice monks walk in procession during a seasonal Buddhist ceremony along the Stung Siem Reap river that flows through this lovely town in northwest Cambodia. I took this photo during my last trip to Cambodia, which was also the last trip with my faithful fixer/driver/translator and friend, Sok Sin, who died less than a year later of AIDS. Sok Sin was legendary among the foreign correspondents, mostly because he spoke excellent English, Vietnamese, Cantonese, and Khmer (Cambodian), but I always used him because of his excellent common sense, especially in tense situations. It was ironic he died of AIDS, as he had survived war and four years of Pol Pot, and had finally become rich just before he died. Photo: © Doug Niven |
