Saigon suburbs, January 1968: Viet Cong women guerillas examine map of Saigon during planning for the Tet Offensive, which occurred less than two weeks later. Photographer Lam Tan Tai entered Saigon with Viet Cong troops during Tet, planning to document the bold attack, and was seriously injured in a firefight near the Saigon TV tower; a sympathetic older woman resident helped him get medical care and conceal his Viet Cong affiliation. Mr. Tai was blinded in one eye, lost all his film, and when he recovered he quietly returned to the so-called "liberated area" near the Cambodian border. Photo: © Lam Tan Tai |
