Hanoi, 1960: Ho Chi Minh writes commendation letters in his garden at the elegant Presidential Palace, formerly the French governor's mansion. Ho chose instead to live in a small nearby guest house, in line with his ideals of a simple life. Together with General Vo Nguyen Giap, Ho is given credit for shedding Vietnam of its former colonial master.
