Hanoi, 10/11/45: American Brig. General Philip E. Gallagher arrives in Hanoi to help accept the surrender of the Japanese, who had occupied Vietnam during WWII. To Gallagher's left stand Ho Chi Minh and Emperor Bao Dai, who had just abdicated. During WWII Ho Chi Minh had good relations with the US, and worked together with American OSS agents to plot against the Japanese. Together, they also rescued downed American pilots.
Ho had hoped to have US support for Vietnamese independence, yet this wish fell victim to international politics after WWII.
