Hanoi, 1946: A Vietnamese orphan is silhouetted against what used to be his orphanage, after a brutal French "scorched-earth" campaign to root out communist guerillas hiding in the densely populated Hanoi suburbs. Photographer Nguyen Duy Kien was a young aristocrat used to taking snapshots of pretty girls until he saw the wanton destruction left by French colonial troops, including napalm given to the French as US military aid. Kien felt obliged to document the devastation for the sake of history, and his photographs had never been published before. Photo: © Nguyen Duy Kien |
