"Viet Bac", 1951: Viet Minh guerillas pause during the Tran Hung Dao campaign against the French, somewhere in the "Viet Bac," which roughly translates to "liberated area". The long canvas tubes around their necks and bodies carried dry rice, and this technique allowed each soldier to carry several week's worth of rice. Twenty years later Pol Pot's Maoist Khmer Rouge guerillas used the same technique.
