Cambodian man photographed at S-21 prison before interrogation, torture, and death. Pol Pot created S-21 to eliminate both real and perceived enemies of his radical Maoist-inspired Khmer Rouge movement. Nearly 30,000 people were imprisoned at S-21, with only seven survivors. Several Americans, Australians, and other foreigners, including hundreds or thousands of Vietnamese, were also imprisoned at S-21 and later killed. Photo: © Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide |
